If you were to ask me 10 years ago what I would be doing today, running a bedding company wouldn’t even be on the list. Although I’ve always dreamt of owning a business, being in the business of sheets and duvets wasn’t something I set out to do. I’ve spent my entire career as a creative freelancer working for major retail brands around the country. Through my travels and experience, this business found its way to me.
Growing up in a midwestern middle-class family in the 80’s, I didn’t even know what a duvet was until I was an adult. When I set out on my own and decided I wanted all the finer things in life that a recent college graduate could afford, I purchased my first duvet cover. I soon decided it was the worst purchase ever made. After a couple of months of having to basically crawl inside the duvet cover and still not being able to make my bed look like it was made by an adult, I passed the whole thing down to my younger sister for her to deal with and chalked it up as a lesson learned; don’t make something simple- like a comforter, over complicated.
Fast forward to years later when I started running 3 Airbnbs in two states. I soon realized that my stand-by comforter was now becoming complicated. Washing a bulky comforter between every guest was just not a practical option. So, I conquered my duvet PTSD, and gave the whole thing another chance. However, I was disappointed to find that not much had changed in the duvet department other than the fact that I now had to deal with more of them. I soon found myself yet again battling it out with a duvet, but this time under the time constraints of prepping for guest check-ins. It was at this point that I stopped myself and thought, “Wait, I can fix this”.
I come from a family of problem solvers. I was taught to think my way through challenges. If something isn’t right, you FIX it. Within weeks I had crafted my first prototype for the Triple Zip Duvet Cover- which solved all my duvet cover issues. While I was at it, I started thinking about what else was irritating me in the bedding realm of Airbnb host life. My other main aggravation was the act of picking up the laundry from the laundry service only to spend time sorting it out in order to find the right sheets for the right-sized bed. Many times, this required searching for faded or missing tags. Again, this was a colossal waste of time. I needed a quick and easy system to enable my cleaning staff to turn over properties quickly for same-day check-out and check-ins.
This was the beginning of a three-year adventure to learn everything I could about cotton fabric, bedding manufacturing, and how to launch an online business. While I was confident in my design ideas for both the duvet and the sheet system, I wanted to make sure I created a product that would stand up over time. I worked with a fabric lab to find out everything I could about cotton and developed a fabric that is specifically designed for short-term rentals: durable, lightweight, free from harmful chemicals, and, of course, comfortable. Everything I learned during this time was used to start a business I am proud of and to create products that are host-centric to their very core. As my business grows and new products are developed, my primary goal is to keep the focus on the needs of my host customer. I read every single customer service email, and if something is presented to me that can be improved upon, I do everything I can to make it happen.
When you purchase FIX Linens, you don’t only invest in a quality product, but you support a woman-owned business and passion project. Some people think I’m crazy for launching a small sheet company when there are countless giants in this business. But, I believe if you pick one thing and you work to do that better than anyone else, people will respond. FIX Linens is a labor of love that reflects my passion for travel and dedication to helping fellow short-term rental hosts meet with success.
